The Families Policy: What Happens If Your App Appeals to Kids
Google's Families Policy applies not just to apps explicitly marketed at children, but to apps Google's review determines are likely to appeal to them — based on art style, characters, or gameplay mechanics, independent of your stated target audience.
This matters because Families Policy apps face restrictions on ad networks (only certified families-safe SDKs allowed), data collection minimization, and mandatory content ratings via IARC.
The fix
Fix: if your app has bright colors, simple mechanics, or cartoon characters, review the Families Policy checklist even if you didn't design it for kids — Google may classify it that way regardless.
